Environmental Impact Studies (EIS) are a formal process used to determine how a development project or activity will affect our natural resources such as water, air, land, and wildlife. Engineers can oversee this process from the initial planning stage through to the study report. This process can involve various local governments agencies, such as County and State Health Departments and local Planning/Zoning Boards to ensure that community goals are met. Often, state or federal governments can become involved with a project, when it may affect resources that reach across local political boundaries or that have a national importance. The final report details how a project affects environmental resources in the area with a premise of minimum impact to any sensitive resources.
